Beginnings: The Joy of Simplicity
My journey within electronics industry began in the 1980s, when I received a pair of walkie-talkies for my birthday. They weren’t essential, but they were pure fun by allowing me to connect with friends from around the neighborhood which then sparked a lifelong fascination with technology and consumer electronics. That simple joy of communication and play set the tone for decades of discovery that I would like to discuss in this post.
The CD Revolution
The late 1980s brought a seismic shift to the world of consumer electronics: Compact Discs. CDs changed so much for me. Suddenly, I could enjoy high-quality sound without the hiss of cassettes and delicate bulkiness of LP records. The leap in fidelity and durability was transformative, and it marked the beginning of my deeper engagement with audio and video technologies.
The Dawn of Smartphones
Fast forward to late in the first decade of the late 2000s, and another revolution arrived to the world: Smartphones. From manufacturers like Microsoft, HTC, Apple, Samsung, and LG. Their release was the true dawn of a new era of communication, entertainment, and computing. These devices did not just change how we connect but they redefined how we live, work, and play. I was so immensely captivated by the possibilities and the rapid pace of innovation at this time, that it certainly reignited my love for the industry.
Quiet Performers: Cerwin Vega Subwoofers
Throughout my journey, some products have stood out for their reliability and value. Cerwin Vega mobile subwoofers are a prime example of this. From the first day I heard them in a car, I was hooked and enamored. Efficient and powerful, they didn’t require massive amplifiers and were perfect for the New Wave music I loved in the late 1980s, later discovering how awesome they were when listening to the OG Rap music of the late of early 1990s. These “quiet performers” consistently delivered, proving that great engineering often exceeds flashy branding and high prices.
Lessons Learned: The Myth of Premium
Not every product lived up to the hype or high price. My first Apple phone, the iPhone 3G, was a true letdown for myself and many others across the world. With it, I couldn’t attach pictures to text messages, it lacked stereo Bluetooth, and there was no support for copy/paste of content. Compared to the Android smartphones of the time that had those features native, it felt restrictive and incomplete. This experience reinforced a lesson I’ve carried through my life and career: more expensive doesn’t always mean more better. Real value comes from thoughtful design and practical features, not just a prestigious name.
Evolving Choices: Integration Over Customization
Over time, my approach to and application of consumer electronics has evolved. I moved away from building systems piece by piece, instead favoring devices with integrated solutions. I seek devices like the following for their thoughtful amalgamations.
- Amplifiers with built-in bass controls
- Radios with internal crossovers
- Quality coaxial speakers
These now replace the need for cutting extra holes or running additional wires. Integration has brought simplicity, reliability, and better performance to my world and it is proof that sometimes, less really is more.
Influences and Expertise
My passion over time was shaped by friends in high school, audio magazines, and the talented people I worked with at Dow, MobilWorks, and Classic Sounds. Over the years, I have grown from a curious enthusiast to a seasoned authority, while always learning and sharing knowledge to this day. My relationships with mentors, colleagues, friends, family, and customers became as important to me as the technology and devices themselves.
The Power of Industry Events
Attending CES (Consumer Electronics Show) for the first time in 1993 was a highlight, offering an initial glimpse into the future and a chance to connect with industry leaders. These events fueled my curiosity and kept me at the forefront of change, helping me understand not just what was coming, but why it mattered.
Changing Needs and Preferences
In my early years, the 1990s within the industry, I was an eager early adopter. I was always chasing the latest and greatest products and design to be my own. Now, I’m comfortable reusing equipment and choosing off-the-shelf integrated solutions after a careful selection process. Customization has honestly given way to practicality for me, and I’ve learned that using used gear can be just as rewarding as buying something new. That is because the result is what is important, not the amount of dollars that was expelled.
