Honoring the Individual While Supporting What Matters Most
In our world today, philanthropy and everyday kindness is needed more than ever, giving is often a celebrated act by our nation’s Elite. Yet, true giving is not just about what “they” offer on the surface it’s about how we honor, respect, and appreciate the unique beliefs and motivations that shape each person’s life.
The Diversity of Beliefs and Drivers
Every individual is guided by a constellation of values, experiences, and personal drivers. These beliefs are shaped by culture, upbringing, faith, political alignment, schooling, group allegiances, religion (or lack there of), community, a personal sense of justice, and the lessons learned along their way to today. What inspires one person to act may be entirely different from what moves another to act. Recognizing this diversity is the first step toward meaningful support as a philanthropist.
Respecting the Journey
To truly honor others, we must let others walk their own path, trusting that we all want better for ourselves and the world. This means listening without judgment, offering help without imposing our own views, whether right or wrong, and appreciating the richness that comes from different perspectives. Respect is not passive, it’s an active choice to see the value in someone else’s journey, even when it differs from our own.
Giving with Integrity
Supporting others does not mean abandoning my own core beliefs while promoting justice in the world. In fact, the most powerful acts of generosity come from a place of authenticity. When I give, I do so because something resonates deeply within me sparked by a suggestion by my father. This could be to a cause, a person, a movement, a skill, or even a moment that aligns with my core values. The key for me is to support those whose journey I believe in, while still honoring the right of others to follow their own path.
The Balance: Support and Appreciation
It’s possible and also essential to find balance between supporting what matters most to us and appreciating the choices of others. This balance is the foundation of a compassionate community.
It means:
- Standing firm in your values: Support causes and people that align with your core, but do so with humility and openness.
- Celebrating differences: Recognize that diversity of thought and motivation enriches our collective experience.
- Giving without strings attached: Help others without expecting them to adopt your beliefs or values.
Why This Matters
When giving is rooted in respect and appreciation, it becomes transformative for me. It builds bridges instead of walls, fosters understanding instead of division, and creates a legacy of kindness that honors both myself and the receiver. In a world where differences often divide us, choosing to give with respect is a radical act of unity.
Personal Example
For as long as I can remember, dogs have been a central part of my life. My first pet, a dog, came into my life when I was seven years old. Since then, the companionship of a dog has brought me immeasurable joy, friendship, and comfort. Because I’m allergic to cats, I’ve always gravitated toward supporting canines and their causes, and I know firsthand how transformative adopting a dog can be for both the animal and its new human.
“Who adopted who?” is always a heartwarming thought when I think of all my furry friends present and past.
That’s why I choose to give back by supporting those who adopt dogs through local charities. For a few adopters each month, when they welcome a new dog into their home, I purchase adoption kits for them. These kits include essentials like a bag of food, a collar, a leash, and a harness. These things are my way of easing the transition for both the dog and the adopter, ensuring that their journey together starts with everything they need for a happy, healthy beginning. This is also a way to celebrate a furry friend joining a family of their own.
I don’t ask for anything in return, nor do I expect others to share my reasons for supporting dog adoption. These new owners have no idea that I bought the kit for their new furry friend or them. I simply want to honor the unique bond between people and their pets, and to show appreciation for those who open their hearts and homes to animals in need. By giving in this way, I’m able to stay true to my own experiences and values, while respecting that everyone’s path to kindness may look a little different.

Final Thoughts
True generosity is not just about what we give, but how we give. It’s about seeing the humanity in others, honoring their beliefs, and supporting what we know in our hearts to be right. By letting others have their own drivers and beliefs, while standing firm in our own, we create a ripple of compassion that can change lives, starting with our own.
